1st Class – Science Week

The children took part in a number of science experiments this week!

First of all, they learned that germs stick to your hands and that water does not get rid of them. Soap is needed to get rid of germs and germs do not stick to soap. They learned this by using glitter to represent germs.

The children then learned about carbonated gas that is in fizzy drinks. They watched raisins sink to the bottom in a jar of water as no carbonated gas is present. However, they observed raisins ‘dancing’ (going up and down) in a jar of 7up due to the bubbles carrying the raisins up, and the raisins falling back down when the bubbles pop at the surface of the 7up.

The children then made lava lamps. They predicted what would happen when water and oil are put together and how an alka seltzer tablet would change these materials. We put oil, water, food colouring and an alka seltzer tablet in a jar. The tablet caused the coloured water to bubble up and down through the oil.

The children really enjoyed the experiments and did an amazing job, maith sibh!
