First Class spent the afternoon designing and constructing their very own mbiras. An mbira is a traditional musical instrument in Zimbabwe, South Africa. The children began by designing a wooden block. They then stuck lollipop sticks to the block with elastic bands. Hair clips were slid onto the lollipop sticks. When the children press down on the hair clips with their thumbs, it makes a cool sound. The children thoroughly enjoyed making these and I’m sure lots of fun lessons are to be had with them soon!
